We are currently recruiting on behalf of our well respected and growing food manufacturing client based near Chard. We are assisting them with the recruitment of a Supervisor for their packing and despatch department.

Supervisors manage departments and production lines to ensure that their cheeses are correctly weighed, packaged, stored and despatched for their customers to receive and consumers to enjoy. The quality of their products needs to be reliably and consistently maintained and packing must be performed efficiently.

In order to maintain the company standards you will need to work at pace, without compromising quality, be able to work as part of a team, whilst diligently following instructions and adhering to training provided. The requirement to interact with your team members, management, and to record your work activities means you will need to have an acceptable level of numeracy and literacy to perform the role properly.

Main Duties include:

  • Lead and motivate department staff, providing clear direction; plan work and organise resources to ensure targets and quality standards are met and customer orders filled.
  • Monitoring and managing performance of the team, providing support and guidance where necessary, including coaching team members, appraisals, conducting investigation meetings and involvement in the disciplinary process.
  • Working with the Line Leaders and operatives to optimise yields, minimising waste and giveaway.
  • Working with the despatch team to ensure finished product leaves site on time, to the right despatch standards.
  • Ensuring all product is cleared for use and is packed to the correct quality standards.
  • Ensuring all production and despatch checks are completed accurately and on time and that all products are appropriately and accurately labelled, according to Customer and Company specifications.
  • Ensuring goods in checks are completed and packaging materials are released to the factory promptly.
  • Ensuring stock in the area of control is managed to best optimise yield and minimise waste.
  • Maintaining full traceability of products through the packing and despatch process, including use of the EFACS system.
  • Working safely, following Company Health and Safety policies and work instructions and completing Risk Assessments as required.
  • Assisting the Site Trainer in the training of Line Leaders, Packing and Despatch Operatives.
  • Operation of Packing Machines, Line Equipment and Fork Lifts in the department.
  • Ensuring work areas and equipment are cleaned as set out in the cleaning schedule.
  • Accurately completing any associated administration.
  • Supporting the Packing and Despatch Manager and Deputy in the day to day operation of the department and liaising with other department supervisors as necessary.

  • Understand the importance of food hygiene, traceability and safety and how to achieve the required standards.
  • Understand and apply safe working practices; experience of undertaking risk assessments would be beneficial (training, up to IOSH Managing Safely provided)

We would welcome applications from anyone who has previously worked within the dairy / food industry, although this type of experience is not essential.

Basic hours of work are 40 per week Monday to Friday , Typically an 8 : 9 hour day, worked between 6.30am and 16:30 (includes 30 min unpaid break). However, we must recruit people who are willing to provide a degree of flexibility, with start and finish times. The working pattern will be kept as stable as possible, but flexibility may be required for changes to working days to meet business demands, i.e. to include occasional weekends, and working on some Bank Holidays if required.

The starting hourly rate is £11.42 rising to £12.00 subject to satisfactory completion of training/probation (typically 3 : 6 months).
Holidays - 26 days + 8 bank holidays
Enhanced hourly rates for overtime (over 40 hours) and certain time periods, e.g. weekends, bank holidays.
Pension scheme - employer contributions of 6% after 3 months
